The Christmas Season has me thinking about something – Maureen Haberstro
This Christmas season has me thinking about something that I never really thought about before: fragrances. With the season come the fragrances that are symbolic of Christmas. As these fragrances are released into the atmosphere around us, they trigger memories or dreams of a better time. They lead us to remembering days past which could be either fond or grievous to us. The smell of cinnamon, cloves, pine, cranberries, vanilla, mulberry, fireplaces to mention a few seem to trigger a sense of anticipation of a day ahead.
I have been thinking about this in relation to us being the fragrance of Christ to those around us. As we press in to be more like Him in our words and actions, we release a fragrance of His love. This fragrance is smelled by those who come near us. It is released in to the atmosphere. The responses to Christ’s love are similar to other natural fragrances. They can be happy and excited looking forward to what lies ahead, or they can be grieved by their personal life experiences. The best part is that we are the fragrance of Christ bringing hope, joy and love into a world longing for it.
